For Women Affected by Domestic Abuse in North Somerset

Did You Know?

  • One in four women experience abuse within a relationship, many women suffer in silence and behind closed doors.
  • The abuse can be physical, sexual, financial or emotional and often includes all of the above.
  • It is very common and accounts for a quarter of all violent incidents reported to the police: they estimate they get a call every minute from someone affected by domestic abuse and yet only a small percentage of incidents are ever reported to the police.
  • There are children in half of the households where there is domestic abuse.
  • Two women a week die in England and Wales as a result of domestic abuse.

Why Do Women Stay In Abusive Homes?

Women stay in abusive homes because they may have no choice:

  • They may feel threatened with further abuse or injury if they seek help or try to leave.
  • They may not have any money or ability to earn money and support the family. They may not know what their rights are.
  • They may fear rejection by their family and friends.
  • They may fear losing their children.
