One in four women experience abuse within a relationship, many women suffer in silence and behind closed doors.
The abuse can be physical, sexual, financial or emotional and often includes all of the above.
It is very common and accounts for a quarter of all violent incidents reported to the police: they estimate they get a call every minute from someone affected by domestic abuse and yet only a small percentage of incidents are ever reported to the police.
There are children in half of the households where there is domestic abuse.
Two women a week die in England and Wales as a result of domestic abuse.

Women stay in abusive homes because they may have no choice:

They may feel threatened with further abuse or injury if they seek help or try to leave.
They may not have any money or ability to earn money and support the family. They may not know what their rights are.
They may fear rejection by their family and friends.
They may fear losing their children.
